Modalities can use DICOM storage to send images, modality worklist to obtain scheduled data, query/retrieve to locate studies, storage commitment to confirm responsibility, and other services for specialized workflows. DICOM conformance statements describe implemented capabilities, while integration design defines how those capabilities are used locally.

Troubleshooting the right layer

If an association is rejected, inspect endpoint and negotiation details. If objects arrive but attach to the wrong order, inspect identifiers and matching. If a study is stored but not visible to a user, inspect PACS indexing, lifecycle, permissions, viewer, or workflow state. Naming the layer prevents DICOM from becoming a catch-all label.
